Inspired by the idea of the slowly thawing snow and the ice melt along the lakes and streams of Wisconsin’s north woods. I wanted the capture that sense of the “in-between”, the fog among the pine trees and the pockets of open water below.

An abstract view of the prairies near me, depicting their bleak and almost monochromatic hues! Can’t you tell I’m longing for Spring?

It was inspired by a winter visit to North Beach in Waukegan. There is a small prairie area which separates the car park from the lakeshore.
An interesting juxtaposition of land and water.

As I walked the harbor wall one clear summer’s morning last June, I could see so far out, right across the bay. Not a soul in sight. Just me and the Lakeshore. Inspired by a walk along the harbor wall at Egg Harbor, Door County, WI.

I wanted to capture the sense of a long view of MCCD’s Glacial Park Conservation area, looking down the valley from the top of the road at the entrance.
I made the initial sketches for this painting en plein aire during one very hot July day. I created this panoramic painting from my sketch when I returned home to my (cooler) studio.

Original painting using watercolors and pastels, inspired by a stormy day on the beaches of the Outer Banks, NC. We went to the Outer Banks in late March for a break from the Midwest’s winter weather and had an unexpected stormy day.
I created this painting using watercolors for the background and soft pastels for the details on the grasses and the beach.

Inspired by aerial views of the Irish sea coast along the Mayo coastline. The blend of beaches, shallow waters and pockets of deep sea, nestled along a coastline dotted with small fields enclosed by stone walls and groves of short, stunted trees.

Inspired by some crab shells I came across on Hobbit Beach, along the Oregon Coast Highway, Oregon. The beautiful colors of the shells caught my eye, even though they were empty inside and seemed abandoned there on the shoreline.

Capturing the landscape at dusk in the dead of winter. The prairie had been burnt during the fall and the new spring growth had not yet started. This landscape is located at MCCD’s Glacial Park Conservation area, near Ringwood, Northern Illinois.

My painting depicts the spring migration flight of the Sandhill Cranes at the Platte River in Nebraska. I wanted to capture the sensation of standing at the river, watching thousands and thousands of cranes flying overhead, swirling and honking in the early morning chill.
Every March, over 1,000,000 sandhill cranes migrate through the Platte River region on their way north to Canada. Painted on location at the Platte River near Alda, NE.
Painting was featured in the Lakes Region Watercolor Guild Spring 2023 Art Show at the Old Opera House, Woodstock, IL.

Sitting on the beach, I could see a large, noisy flock of seagulls perched on a rusty and decaying concrete structure out on the Lake. As soon as I finished the painting, they all flew off! Perhaps they felt they were no longer needed by this artist?

Standing on the edge of the rocky shoreline, the waves were gently pulsating on the rocks below. I could hear voices out on the water; then three kayaks came into view. I captured this peaceful scene en Plein Air one sunny June day on location at the Cave Point County Park, Door County, WI.
